HistorySpanish explorer Gabriel Moraga discovered the area and named it Sacramento Valley, referring to the Catholic sacrament, he was enamored of the beauty of the area. By August of 1839, John Sutter had arrived from Switzerland and established a trading colony and built New Helvetia (New Sweden), a fort that became known as Sutter’s Fort. It was a small but thriving place until 1848 when James W. Marshall discovered gold, bringing in men by the thousands, who came to make their fortune. Sutter, Jr. planned the City of Sacramento with Sam Brannan, and they hired William H. Warner to draft the official layout of the city.
The residents adopted a charter in 1849 and were recognized by the state legislature in 1850, making it the oldest incorporated city in California and Governor John Bigler moved the state legislature to Sacramento in 1854. By 1874, the state capitol was complete and California had been a state for 24 years setting the stage for its continued growth and prosperity. With its new status as state capital and its strategic location, Sacramento flourished, becoming the western end of the Pony Express as well as the terminus for the first Transcontinental Railroad. Today, the city’s government is a city council and manager, adopted in 1920, with continued growth through the years with Sacramento merging with North Sacramento and growing to be the prosperous city is today.
